Human Rights Watch ("HRW") is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Associate for its Advocacy and Operations Departments in its Brussels office.
Description: The Associate will contribute professionally to the day-to-day administrative, clerical and operational activities for one of HRW's busy advocacy offices in Europe, including but not limited to, managing extensive files, contact lists and databases; setting up meetings and recording minutes; formatting and disseminating letters and other publications; managing expense reimbursement for the Advocacy Department; making travel arrangements; photocopying, filing, faxing, answering phones, processing incoming mail; and other assigned tasks.
The Associate will also be charged with operational tasks, including, managing bank accounts and financial transactions; producing reports; working with financial service vendors; handling issues with relation to HRW's Association Sans But Lucratif (ASBL) status; maintaining the smooth and effective functioning of the office; handling reception and supplies; answering general enquiries; handling facilities tasks including general office maintenance and security and liaising with the landlord; and troubleshooting IT issues, including helpdesk support to Brussels-based staff.
The ratio of time devoted to various functions is expected to vary over time, and there may be significant periods of time when particular components of the job are dominant. HRW prides itself on its professionalism and on providing the highest levels of responsiveness and service to staff across the organization, so the person in this position will be expected to take initiative to identify and solve problems and implement administrative innovations. S/he will be expected to build close and collaborative relationships with the managers and staff based in the Brussels office, as well as colleagues in other European offices and the organization's headquarters in New York. S/he will work closely with both the Brussels-based EU Director and the London-based Associate Director of European Operations and play a collaborative role in handling cross-border operational issues in Europe.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3-5 years of operations or administrative experience in a demanding and fast-paced environment. S/he must demonstrate excellent organizational, administrative and financial skills, a proven history of taking initiative, prioritization and solving problems, superb interpersonal skills, and high energy and attention to detail. S/he will have excellent leadership and management skills, including the demonstrated ability to work successfully with a team of talented professionals in multiple global locations. Strong interest in international human rights advocacy is desirable. Applicants for this position must possess current EU work authorization for a minimum of two years from the start date.
