Ngos and political organizations in Brussels protect there own interests by lobbying their views to EU officials. Law firms, political organizations and Lobby Groups generally have the interests of some big organizations to protect. They protect their interests by arguing points that would benefit these organizations. NGOs are generally on the opposite side of these arguments.

NGO jobs are not always advertised and it is people who are well networked that get to know about them first. One has to be already involved in NGOs to have the advantage
Actual jobs in NGOs are reserved for people with the appropriate qualifications. Currently even well qualified people cannot always find what they are looking for, so be prepared to get in as a volunteer. In order to get the experience and develop your address book.
NGOs are non profit organisaitons, employees or volunteers working at NGOs do not get the standard pay for what they are doing. Job satisfaction could be much higher than working for a big organizations, and this is an alternative form of payment for some people.
Volunteers are generally very dedicated people. You will be under paid and under resourced. Burn out is common, so you should also take care of yourself!
