Organising Job Search

During your job search, you have to use all available methods in order to be competitive. Most jobseeker use the following strategies in their job search
  • Internet
  • Phone and Faxes
  • Post
  • Unsolicited Applications
  • Employment Agencies
  • Job Centers
  • Networking with personal contacts and acquaintances
  • Classified Advertisements

Phone and Faxes Some times faxes can be used to send your CV, this is not common practice for job seekers. Job Seekers are also (sometimes) interviewed over the phone for overseas jobs. The Phone is also used for following up on job leads and checking job application status. Be prepared when calling and make sure you know the answer to any obvious questions you might be asked.

Unsolicited Applications Sending a job application on your own initiative. (not in reply to a specific job advert). You can send your resume by normal post. You can also present your application in person. This method is a long shot but your objective is for your resume to be on file.

Job Centers Job centers are government funded offices that help unemployed people or students in their job search. These offices can help with resume writing, developing extra job skills or training for your career. Employment Officers can also help you in finding the right job.

Internet The internet has some very good resources on job searching and hunting. Most companies also publish their job vacancies on their websites. Other companies act as middle man between the employer and possible employees.

Networking can help you tap into the hidden job market. A lot of jobs are never advertised and are filled in through contacts in the industry. Make sure every person you know is aware that you are looking for a job.

Job Classified Ads Be Sure to follow the instructions stated in the ad. Follow up your application after a week. If you feel you can do the job but are not qualified apply any way.
